Hopkinton Chamber volunteers at MetroWest YMCA

by | Oct 25, 2018 | Business, Featured

Cool rainy weather changed work plans but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce members who volunteered at the MetroWest YMCA Family Outdoor Center Oct. 12.

“The team of local business leaders installed a new team-building initiative on the Y’s challenge course, or what they call a Low Ropes Element,” said Scott Umbel, branch executive director for MetroWest YMCA Family Outdoor Center. “The installation was for an activity called Electric Fence, that students and adults navigate through group communication and discussion to discover a solution to the challenge on their own. Though the name may sound ominous, the Y can assure you that there is no electricity running through the ropes, though it’s no less challenging to tackle as a group on the course.”

Volunteers from the chamber drilled holes and sank giant staples into the trees, where the low-ropes equipment for the Electric Fence will attach. Some tried out a few pieces of equipment for fun.

The Y’s Family Outdoor Center spans a scenic 122 acres on and around East Street in Hopkinton. The center’s facilities include miles of wandering hiking and walking trails, outdoor pools, and adventure facilities, including the challenge course the chamber worked on. As part of the nonprofit MetroWest YMCA, the center serves the community year-round with indoor and outdoor programs and activities and a focus on adventure programs for youth and family. On Oct. 12, it was the chamber’s time to serve the Y to help them to expand their challenge course.

The Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce is a business organization with a mission to serve its members, “by supporting and advocating for an environment where members and their communities prosper.”
