Business Profile: Learning is values-based in summer program at Touchstone Community School

by | Apr 4, 2021 | Business, Featured

Touchstone Community School, serving children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, offers an exciting summer camp that reflects the Grafton school’s progressive, playful and joyful approach to learning.

“Summer at Touchstone is led by our own teachers,” stated Sally Kent, head of school. “We understand how disruptive this pandemic has been for so many children, and this program will provide the feel of a fun summer combined with a safe environment where children can be free to play, be creative, learn new skills, build friendships, and experience many things.”

Children ages 4-6 will enjoy the amazing, outdoor wooded classroom built especially for the early childhood program. This half-day program will incorporate play, storytelling, inventions, arts, crafts and building friendships.

A full-day program will be offered to children ages 6 and up. Youngsters will choose one project block in the morning and a different block in the afternoon, all designed and taught by Touchstone teachers.

Project blocks will include do-it-yourself toy-making, machine- and hand-sewing, woodworking, creating comics, piñata-making, gardening, mud play, exercise and fitness, track and field, exploring engines and much more. Detailed descriptions are available online.

In between project blocks there will be free time, water play, structured physical activities, choice times and academic enrichment when students can receive academic support and engage in math games, silent reading, reading aloud, storytelling and games.

“We are intentionally limiting capacity for the Touchstone Summer Program to ensure a rich program where every child can be known, be safe and have his or her needs met,” Kent said.

According to Kent, students at Touchstone are typically curious, vivid individuals who are collaborative problem solvers and friendly. The youngsters form strong relationships with their teachers and have a deep respect for the environment and one another. Summer campers will experience a snapshot of the school and an opportunity to know the teachers.

Touchstone staff members are committed to building a community that values and embraces diversity, including culture, race, ethnicity, family structure, gender, sexual orientation, ability, religion and socio-economic status.
