HHS Sports Roundup: Boys tennis, girls tennis, baseball post tournament wins

by | Jun 24, 2021 | Featured: Sports, Sports

The Hopkinton High School girls tennis team knocked off top-seeded and undefeated King Philip on Thursday, posting a 3-2 road victory in the Division 1 South sectional semifinals.

The second doubles team of Victoria Allen and Romy Zinman posted a straight-set victory to get things started, and when No. 3 singles player Riley Krattenmaker picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory to improve her season record to 17-0, the Hillers were one point away from victory. Following a rare loss for the first doubles team of Sophie Kaplan and Vani Sharma, second singles player Maddy LaMachia delivered a 7-5, 6-3 win to clinch the match. With the outcome already decided, Maya Storm dropped a three-set match at first singles.

“Each match I tell my team we need three points, no matter where we get them,” said fifth-year coach Lyn Calkins. “[Against King Philip], for instance, we got our points at No. 2 and 3 singles and second doubles. Everybody’s point is as valuable as anyone else’s. And anyone could have a much tougher match than the others.”

The girls will visit Wellesley on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the sectional final. …

The HHS boys tennis team earned its spot in the Division 2 South sectional final with a 4-1 home victory over Tri-Valley League rival Westwood on Thursday morning.

Aidan Yagoobi, Lex Kaye and Adam Glace won the singles matches, and the second doubles team of Thomas Guerra and Andrew Palacios provided the Hillers with their other point. The first doubles team of Rex Lind and Spencer Smith dropped a three-set match for Hopkinton’s only setback.

The boys will play at top-seeded Duxbury on Friday at 5 p.m. in the sectional final. …

Baseball closed out Hopkinton’s perfect day, traveling to Dighton-Rehoboth and coming away with a 7-1 victory behind starting pitcher Vinnie Purpura and reliever Mike Burney. Cam Mulvaney had a two-run single, Cam Jerrett drove in one run and the Hillers took advantage of some wild D-R pitching to manufacture the rest of their runs.

The Hillers will host North Attleboro on Friday at 5 p.m. in the Division 2 South semifinals.
