Hopkinton State Park beaches remain closed due to poor water quality, mirroring statewide trend

by | Jul 21, 2023 | News

The upper and main beaches at Hopkinton State Park remain closed after being deemed unsafe for swimming due to high bacteria counts, an issue that is being seen this week in beaches throughout the state.

The state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation announced Friday that there were high levels of enterococci bacteria, posing a harm risk if a person is submerged in or ingests the water.

On Thursday, The Boston Globe reported that more than 70 Massachusetts beaches remained closed during the height of summer due to unsafe bacteria levels. Swimming in contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea and vomiting, ear and eye infections, respiratory illnesses and skin rashes, the article stated.
