Severe thunderstorms or worse possible in area along with high heat; Trails Club postpones Thursday evening walk

by | Jul 27, 2023 | Featured: News, News

Due to the weather forecast of severe thunderstorms and a possible isolated tornado, Thursday night’s walk at the Hughes Farm Trail has been postponed, the Hopkinton Trails Club announced early Thursday afternoon.

An advisory from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency on Thursday morning indicated that the National Weather Service, in conjunction with the agency meteorologist, is forecasting a high-impact, multifaceted weather event for the state from noon-9 p.m. Thursday.

“There are several hazards forecasted that include the possibility for tornadoes, straight-line wind damage, strong to severe thunderstorms, and flooding rains,” the notice reads. “Those with outdoor plans today should heed extra caution, as conditions may change quickly.”

A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday through Saturday for much of the state. Temperature highs are expected to range between 90 and 95 degrees, with heat indices between 95 and 104. No significant relief is anticipated with evening and overnight lows expected between 70 and 77 degrees,

The extended forecast calls for the oppressive heat to break sometime late on Saturday. Additional scattered thunderstorms are possible late Saturday as a cold front crosses the region, relieving the hot and humid conditions for Sunday. Sunday is expected to be drier, cooler, and seasonable.

The trail walk, cosponsored by the Hopkinton Trails Club and the Hopkinton Public Library, will be rescheduled.

The Trails Club also has two walks planned in August. For more details, visit the Hopkinton Trails Club website.
