Upper, main beaches remain unsafe for swimming as Labor Day weekend approaches

by | Aug 31, 2023 | Featured: News, News

As the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches, the water quality at the upper and main beaches at Hopkinton State Park remains unsafe for swimming due to an increase in enterococci bacteria over the past week, according to water sample test results released Wednesday.

Results were provided by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation from samples collected and analyzed on Wednesday.

High enterococci bacteria levels have kept beachgoers from swimming at these beaches throughout the summer. There was a brief respite two weeks ago when the bacteria level at the upper beach returned to a safe threshold.

Beaches statewide have been experiencing high levels of bacteria in recent weeks during the time of year when they are in the greatest demand for recreation. One cause is the amount of goose droppings in the water. Ingesting or becoming submerged in bacteria-laden water can lead to symptoms including diarrhea and stomach pains.

Lake Maspenock remains safe for swimming.
