School district prepares for ‘possibility’ of snow day tomorrow

by | Feb 5, 2025 | Education, Featured: Education

Ahead of an impending snowstorm, Hopkinton Public School officials have notified parents and caregivers about the potential for a snow day on Thursday.

“At this time, I am not prepared to make a decision about whether school will be open tomorrow,” Superintendent of Schools Carol Cavanaugh stated in a message to district families Wednesday night.

“I am asking everyone to plan for the possibility of a snow day,” she added.

According to a report from WCVB, 2-4 inches of snow are expected to accumulate, beginning around 8 a.m. The storm is slated to change to sleet and rain in the afternoon, which could result in difficult road conditions.

Cavanaugh stated in her message that the Department of Public Works will begin pretreating the roads early, “so that those roads remain easily traveled until the snow — if it does — become plowable.”

Crews from the DPW and the school district also will be treating and plowing the school grounds throughout the day.

Cavanaugh will meet with DPW crews, the school facilities department and officials from both the fire and police departments to review the situation early Thursday morning to make a decision on whether the schools will open.

“You will only hear from the schools in the event that we are closing for the whole day or any portion of the day,” Cavanaugh stressed.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to use their best judgment in the event the schools remain open. Student absences will be excused if parents believe the inclement weather poses a danger to their student’s safety.

I think schools should close for tomorrow, for it’s not fair if it opens and some students don’t come because of snow and miss information during class time. The road conditions are really slippery I might not take my kids to school

She provided a no update ‘update’. Just make the call. Parents have to plan their day. It is difficult to do while we wait for the 5:30am call. Have some consideration for parents
