Good morning, Hopkinton!

For those new to the site, this post is a daily update we call Hopkinton Today. We’ll have a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights for the coming day and a video or two to brighten your day.

With the state’s death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic rising to 89, Gov. Charlie Baker yesterday announced that residents should continue to stay at home until at least May 4, with non-essential businesses remaining shuttered. Baker extended the ban on gatherings of 10 or more people to May 4 as well.

“The next couple of weeks are going to be critical in this battle,” Baker said. “Everyone needs to play their part.”

Positive cases of the disease in the state rose to 6,620, with 46,935 people having been tested. The state received federal approval to open three field medical stations to deal with the crisis. The first will be a 250-bed facility at the DCU Center in Worcester, which will be run by staff from nearby UMass Medical Center.

While Baker specifically discouraged activities like group basketball games, local organizations are getting creative to encourage people to remain active. The Hopkinton Basketball Association is organizing a free program in which players in Grades 3-8 are challenged to practice on their own as often as possible and make a total of 4,000 shots in the month of April. Those who accomplish this goal will receive a small reward. Registration is due by Friday. For more information, check the HBA website.
