The Department of Public Works on Friday released a public notice informing residents it had extended the town’s mandatory water supply conservation restrictions for all customers on the municipal water system.

DPW Director Kerry Reed stated in the notice that drought conditions have persisted in the region since August 2025. The state’s Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs upgraded Hopkinton to level 3 critical drought status as of March 9.

Despite Wells 4, 7 and 8 returning to service in recent days ahead of “high demand season,” the DPW recommends continued water conservation restrictions be observed. Municipal water customers are discouraged from outdoor water use; lawn watering, vehicle washing, pool filling and other non-essential use is prohibited.

Permitted uses during the water restriction include food, fiber and livestock production, hand watering of gardens and “water use essential to the core function of a commercial business.”

Any non-essential water use is subject to written warnings and fines. Continued violations could result in suspension of water service.
