Container gardening

The Hopkinton Garden Club continues its Online Speaker Series with the presentation “Container Gardening” with Jeffrey Doherty on Tuesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Container gardening is the practice of growing plants in containers such as pots, planters, window boxes and hanging baskets, instead of planting them in the ground. The plants may include decorative flowers, cacti, edible plants such as herbs and vegetables, and small trees. There are numerous advantages to growing plants in containers, namely that movable plants give more control over moisture, sunlight and temperature. There is also less risk of weed problems and soil-borne disease.

Jeffrey J. Doherty is the principal at Angel’s Garden Center and co-owner with his wife, Dayle. Angel’s Garden Center is a landmark at the intersection of West Main and School Streets in Hopkinton and was founded in 1957 by Jeff’s parents, Angel and Paul Doherty. Jeff holds a B.S. in public administration from Bentley University and is a Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist. He was elected president of the Massachusetts Flower Growers Association in February 2019. He also serves as a volunteer on the Community Preservation Committee, chair of the Open Space Preservation Commission and chair of the Design Review Board. Jeff and his wife reside in Hopkinton with their two dogs, Fitzgerald and Lady.

This program is open to the public. Non-members are asked to preregister at register@hopkintongardenclub.org and state their interest in attending. Instructions will be sent prior to the event.

The Hopkinton Garden Club Online Speaker Series is supported in part by a grant from the Hopkinton Cultural Council through the Massachusetts Cultural Council LCC program.

The Hopkinton Garden Club is a nonprofit organization whose mission in the local community is education, beautification and conservation. The club was organized in 1924 and is an affiliate of The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. Visit hopkintongardenclub.org for more information.
