To shed light on lesser-known female history makers, the Hopkinton Women’s Club will present a PowerPoint program on Zoom on Monday, Jan. 10, at 11:15 a.m. highlighting the contributions of Maggie Lena Walker. She played a significant role as the first black woman bank president in the United States. This trailblazer fought misfortune and personal pain in a life lived in the public eye. It wasn’t until 2017 that the city of Richmond, Virginia, dedicated a memorial statue to commemorate her crusade for black economic and political rights, especially for black women.
