Abby Burke scored two goals, including the game-winner on a breakaway in overtime to give the Hopkinton High School field hockey team a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Brookline on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Division 1 state tournament.

The 10th-seeded Hillers (8-6-5) next play at seventh-seeded Concord-Carlisle (10-4-5) on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Round of 16.

With just over five minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Taylor Interrante stole a pass near midfield. After a nice move to evade a defender, Interrante found Burke wide open and past the last line of defense. From the right side, Burke lifted a near-side shot past the goalie for the winner.

Hopkinton opened the scoring less than 90 seconds into the game. Emmy Foster took a shot from about 10 yards away. Mary Finnegan, standing about 5 yards in front of the net, deflected it to the left side, where Burke slammed it home, inside the near post.

Brookline (6-9-4), the 23rd seed, tied it up midway through the second quarter.

Soccer schedules revealed

The HHS girls soccer team (13-3-2) earned the 14th seed in Division 1 and will open postseason play Tuesday at 4 p.m. by hosting 19th-seeded Weymouth (3-8-7) in the Round of 32.

HHS boys soccer is seeded 27th in Division 1. The Hillers (8-5-4) will host 38th-seeded Methuen (10-2-6) in a preliminary-round game Monday at 4 p.m..

Football falls to Westwood

The HHS football team dropped a 14-0 decision to visiting Westwood on a rainy Thursday night.

The Hillers, who were coming off a 20-6 home victory over Dedham the previous week, are 2-6.
