Start of fall HS sports pushed back to Sept. 14

by | Jul 24, 2020 | Sports

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), which governs high school sports in the state, announced earlier this week that tryouts/practices for fall sports will not start until Sept. 14.

Fall sports had been scheduled to start on Aug. 24 (with football starting three days earlier).

This does not mean there definitely will be a fall sports season. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) are planning an announcement in early August regarding the viability of playing scholastic sports during the pandemic.

DESE commissioner Jeffrey Riley, who took part in the MIAA announcement, said administrators “are looking at everything.”

“If we can do sports we would certainly like to do it, but it has to be done in a safe way,” he said.
