HHS indoor track teams improve to 3-0 with wins over Medfield

by | Jan 20, 2021 | Sports

The Hopkinton High School indoor track and field teams continued their impressive seasons with victories Wednesday over Medfield in meets held at Wheaton College in Norton. Both teams now are 3-0.

The girls picked up a 51-35 victory. Senior Hailey Tolson won both the 55 meters (7.4 seconds) and 300 (43.5), beating two of the fastest girls in the league. Other winning performances came from Kate Powers (shot put), Olivia Jones (2-mile) and the 4×400 relay team of Cat Dacey, Grace Joy, Sowmya Karthikeyan and Tiffany Mikulis. Also for the Hillers, Ellie Driscoll took second in the 55 hurdles, Katie Callery was second in the mile and third in the 2-mile, Autumn Tumbleton was second in the 2-mile and third in the mile, Dacey was second in the 600, Joy was second in the 1,000, and Mikulis took third in the 55.

The meet was very close heading into the final two races, but when Hopkinton swept the 2-mile it was clinched before the relay.

Coach Jean Cann noted that the team’s depth was key to the win.

“One of the most impressive things I noticed about today’s meet was that we took all but one of the third-place scoring slots,” she said. “Third place is only one point, but all those thirds in different events really added up.”

The boys rolled to a 60-26 victory. Winners included seniors Harrison Prucher (55 hurdles), Aidan Rowell (55), Tommy Bernardin (high jump), Justin Wade (1,000) and Aidan Morin (shot put). Senior Nick Brown won the mile and was one of four Hillers to break 5 minutes along with Wyatt Ruff, Matt Burdulis and Lex Kaye, who also took second in the 2-mile.

Boys and girls alpine skiing are scheduled to compete Thursday night, but all other HHS winter teams have been put on hold through Sunday due to the COVID-19 spike and the associated contact tracing.
