Army baseball’s Simoes named league’s top defensive player

Hopkinton’s Tim Simoes, a senior on the Army baseball team, recently was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. A second baseman, Simoes finished the regular season with 81 assists and 49 putouts, ranking among the league leaders with a .985 fielding percentage and 22 double plays. He led all Patriot League second basemen with 132 chances and made just two errors.

In league games, Simoes had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 83 chances with 54 assists, 29 putouts and 16 double plays (tied for second most).

Simoes, son of Hopkinton High School baseball coach Steve Simoes, also has had a solid season at the plate, hitting .284 with six doubles, two triples, a home run and 20 RBI. He had six stolen bases in nine attempts.

Army takes a 26-22 record heading into the league championship series against Lehigh that starts Wednesday.

UPDATE, May 27: Army defeated Lehigh in the best-of-three championship series to advance to the NCAA tournament.
