Severe weather expected Sunday as hurricane heads toward region

Hurricane Henri map

The National Weather Service map on Saturday predicted the storm’s center would pass just to the west of Hopkinton and bring heavy winds and rain to the area.

UPDATE, Sunday, 7 p.m.: The storm has shifted west, sparing Hopkinton from the worst weather. The National Weather Service indicated that there remains the possibility for heavy rain as Henri moves across Southern New England on Monday morning, but “little to no additional wind impacts [are] expected.”

Hopkinton is bracing for another round of wet and windy weather as Hurricane Henri makes its way toward the region.

Forecasts Saturday afternoon suggest the Category 1 hurricane (greater than 74 mph winds) could lessen in severity to a tropical storm (greater than 39 mph winds) after it makes landfall but still will bring heavy rains and strong winds throughout the day Sunday and into early Monday before it leaves the area.

As of Saturday, Hopkinton is just to the east of the storm center’s track, in an area that is expected to receive the strongest winds. Those just to the west of the storm’s center are predicted to have the heaviest rains.

Gov. Charlie Baker encouraged Massachusetts residents to shelter at home Sunday, warning that the storm might lead to about 300,000 power outages along with up to 10 inches of rain.

“If people don’t take this seriously, don’t understand the size and significance of this particular weather pattern, they could end up in a very bad spot,” Baker said at a Friday press conference.
