HHS Sports Roundup: Track stars shine again; swimming sweeps; Sweetapple new volleyball coach

Kate Powers and Sean Golembiewski were at it again this past weekend, breaking records at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Invitational, held at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston.

Powers won the weight throw with a meet record of 48 feet, 1 inch. It was the fourth-longest throw in the country this season.

Golembiewski broke his own school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.54 seconds and set a meet record. His time was the fastest in New England this season.

At the same event, Riley Finnegan took second in the boys weight throw with a toss of 45 feet, 6 inches. …

In team competition on Monday, the girls routed Westwood, 75-20, in the final dual meet of the season. Winners included Keira O’Connor (high jump), Powers (shot put), Autumn Tumbleton (mile), Ellie Driscoll (55 hurdles), Lily Buckley (2 mile), Katie Callery (1,000), Steph Johnson (600), Carmen Thomas (300) and the 4×400 relay team of Aubrey Thomas, Kayla Sawyer, Johnson and Grace Joy.

Fossbender sparks girls hoops

The HHS girls basketball team posted a 37-22 victory at Bellingham on Tuesday night, as Kiki Fossbender scored 17 points.

In a makeup game Sunday against a strong Norwood team, the Hillers fell 54-17.

In their home opener on Jan. 14, the Hillers took care of business against Dedham, picking up a 44-31 victory. …

Boys basketball routed visiting Bellingham on Tuesday behind a balanced effort. Nate Kasper led the way with 18 points, while Evan Mirazimi and Sam Pantera each contributed 14.

On Jan. 14, the Hillers knocked off Dedham, 61-53. Kasper scored 20 points, Mirazimi netted 15 and Zach Hyman spurred the team with strong defense.

Swim teams sweep Dedham

The HHS swimming and diving teams competed at Dedham on Tuesday, and both emerged victorious.

For the boys, who won 85-66, Kevin Gu won the 100 and 200 freestyle races, and the 400 free relay of Tyler Fallon, Shawn Haley, Caleb Burke and Gu recorded their best time of the season.

For the girls, who won 90-64, Deirdre Belger won the individual medley and 100 breaststroke, while Eve Weatherhead recorded 9s on her back dive.

Boys hockey gets another win

The HHS boys hockey team picked up its second win of the season on Saturday, knocking off Dedham, 3-2. Drew Morse, Ryan Teitel and Callum Greenwood scored for Hopkinton. …

Also Saturday, girls hockey — down to nine skaters and needing Morgan Fraser to make an emergency start in goal — fell to Framingham, 5-2.

Wrestling sweeps quad meet

The HHS wrestling team won all three of its matches in a quad meet on Saturday, beating Lowell Catholic (60-17), Concord-Carlisle (48-21) and Arlington (60-12). Justin Sokol, Jason Girard, Steve Moody, Sebastian Losada and Cyrus Hanson all went undefeated on the day.

On Jan. 13, the Hillers bested Holliston, 54-21. Recording pins for Hopkinton were Sokol (in 8 seconds), Will Liptak, Losada, Jari Zaidi and Liam Kassab. …

The alpine ski teams opened their seasons last Thursday. The girls finished second, led by Lila Mato (8th overall) and Klara Niss (10th). The boys took seventh, with Jake Lacoche taking sixth overall.

Sweetapple new volleyball coach

Emma Sweetapple was named varsity volleyball coach, the school announced earlier this month.

Sweetapple replaces Margie Grabmeier, who retired in November after guiding the Hillers to the Division 2 state title‚ her third as HHS coach. She recorded 307 career victories.

An HHS alumnus, Sweetapple served as an assistant to Grabmeier for the past seven seasons. …

Bianca Pal was named Student-Athlete of the Month by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association for December. Pal was a member of the unified basketball team in the fall.
