HHS Sports Roundup: Boys basketball, girls basketball, boys hockey earn tourney berths

The newly redesigned state tournament brackets were unveiled over the weekend, and both Hopkinton High School basketball teams along with boys hockey received bids.

Boys basketball, seeded 34th in Division 1, will get things started with a preliminary-round game at Wellesley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Hillers closed out the regular season last week with two wins: 53-45 at Foxborough on Thursday and 67-40 over visiting Wayland two days earlier. …

Despite carrying a losing record, girls basketball found its way into the tournament based on its strong schedule. The Hillers, seeded 25th in Division 1, will host 40th-seeded Malden in the preliminary round on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Last Tuesday, the Hillers closed out the regular season when they fell to Medway, 41-33, in the championship game of the Westborough Invitational. Kiki Fossbender scored nine points to lead the offense. …

Boys hockey, seeded 29th in Division 2, will play fourth-seeded Masconomet on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. at Haverhill Valley Forum in the Round of 32. The Hillers dropped a 5-3 decision to Ashland on Feb. 23. Drew Morse, Wyatt Iantosca and Michael Berman scored the Hopkinton goals. Last Tuesday, the Hillers recorded their third straight shutout with a 6-0 victory over Hudson. Joey Carrazza and Joe Scardino each scored twice, Vasilii Zolotarev and Declan Durocher had one goal each, and Jack Lang and Connor Fryer combined for the shutout in net. …

HHS senior Kate Powers, who won the USA Track and Field Scholastic Division weight throw with a school-record heave of 49 feet, 4 inches, finished eighth at the all-state meet in the shot put on Saturday.

Also at Saturday’s meet, junior Sean Golembiewski, battling a hamstring injury that kept him out of the 55-meter hurdles, finished sixth in the high jump (6-2). …

Junior Justin Sokol took fifth at the All-State Wrestling Championship on Sunday and became just the sixth wrestler in school history to qualify for the New England championships. …

Sisters Tess and Eve Weatherhead finished third and fourth, respectively, at the state championship meet for diving on Feb. 26. …

At the boys swimming state championships on Sunday at Boston University, the 200 freestyle relay team of Lucas Coffman, Shawn Haley, Kevin Gu and Tyler Fallon recorded a season-best time to place in the top 16, while Davis Peishoff swam the second-fastest time in school history in the 100 backstroke.
