Hopkinton Today: Monday, March 6

by | Mar 6, 2023 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo and video of the day.

Hopkinton Superintendent Carol Cavanaugh and School Committee members said they were taken by surprise when the Select Board requested they come back with a budget reflecting a 5.1 percent increase rather than the $60.1 million fiscal year 2024 proposal, which has an 8.3 percent increase. The superintendent described the consequences as “very dire. It’s not a smooth situation that will be easy to achieve,” she said.

Leading off the HHS Sports Roundup, Joe Carrazza netted a hat trick and the Hopkinton High School boys hockey team knocked off Westwood, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at New England Sports Center in Marlborough in the Division 2 state tournament’s Round of 16.

The team of Dylan Striek, Rylee Blair and Disha Mudenur captured first place at the Hopkinton High School Science Fair on Wednesday with their project titled “Electrolytic Extraction of Dawsonite from Ocean Water: Efficient Saltwater Mineral Recovery through Electrolysis.”

The second annual Family Fling is set for Saturday, March 25, at Hopkinton Town Common. The event, sponsored by the Friends of Hopkinton and the Hopkinton Lions Club, will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and include food, entertainment and activities, including a scavenger hunt.

Town meetings tonight include the Appropriation Committee (6), Sustainable Green Committee (6) and Planning Board (7).

I hate doing this — writing these memorials — but I guess it goes with the territory when you are in your mid-80s. However, I feel it is an honor and privilege to be able to do so for my lifelong friends. I met Dick Byers 69 years ago, the day we entered first...
