HHS Sports Roundup: Girls tennis wins tourney opener

by | May 30, 2023 | Sports

The Hopkinton High School girls tennis team won its Division 2 state tournament opener on Tuesday, edging host Ludlow by a score of 3-2 to advance to the Round of 16.

The 19th-seeded Hillers (13-5) picked up wins in straight sets at first singles (Maya Chen) and both doubles pairings (Evanya Mathur/Aarushi Kamra and Caitlin Mangan/Avery Michaud).

The match against 14th-seeded Ludlow (12-5) was scheduled early to avoid graduation conflicts. The Hillers won’t have another match until early next week. On Friday, third-seeded Westborough will host the winner of Wednesday’s match between Holliston vs. West Springfield, and Holliston will get the survivor.

The HHS boys tennis team — seeded third in Division 2 at 17-1 — will host a Round of 32 game likely this weekend. Longmeadow and West Springfield play Wednesday for the right to visit Hopkinton.

Tournament brackets for baseball, softball and boys/girls lacrosse are slated to be released Wednesday.
