With temperatures headed to 90s, superintendent cautions school families

by | Sep 7, 2023 | Education, Featured: Education

With temperatures in Hopkinton expected to hit 93 degrees Thursday and 89 Friday, Superintendent of Schools Carol Cavanaugh reached out to families to encourage them to be prepared.

Cavanaugh noted that the high school and Hopkins School have air conditioning in common spaces, while Marathon, the town’s newest school, is entirely air-conditioned.

The middle school is one floor plus a below-ground level, so temperatures are “very warm but manageable” there, Cavanaugh wrote in an email Wednesday.

Elmwood, which is slated to be replaced (assuming residents vote to support it], is the biggest concern.

“The outlier is, of course, Elmwood, which does cool down during the evening but will heat up again [Thursday] during the day,” Cavanaugh wrote. “Fans will be in use throughout the Elmwood building, and when possible, air-conditioned spaces will be shared. [Wednesday], we took the temperature of all the second-floor classrooms at Elmwood, and the temperatures fluctuated between 80 and 85 degrees at their peak.”

Cavanaugh encouraged students to dress in light, loose-fitting clothing and bring a water bottle.

All recesses are to be held indoors at the elementary levels.

Added Cavanaugh: “I realize that some families will be reluctant to send their children to school [Thursday]. However, school is in session. Therefore, if you choose to keep your child home due to concerns about the heat, the district will excuse the absence.”
