HHS boys soccer knocks off top seed to reach state semifinals

The Hopkinton High School boys soccer team advanced to the Division 2 state semifinals with a 2-1 road victory over top-seeded Bedford on Saturday afternoon. Jan Antvelink scored the game-winner with less than 16 minutes remaining, converting a corner kick from in front of the goal.

Hopkinton, the eighth seed, improved to 15-2-4 and next will play the winner of Saturday evening’s game between 29th-seeded Agawam and fifth-seeded Wakefield. Bedford’s season ends at 11-3-5.

UDPATE: The Hillers will play Wakefield on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Woburn.

The game was tied at 1 at the half. The Hillers scored first just over eight minutes in as Tim Zakharov took control of a loose ball about 15 yards in front of the net and fired a low, left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal.

Bedford netted the equalizer on a chip shot after a scramble in front with 5 1/2 minutes left in the period.
