Crash on I-90 in Hopkinton sends 2 people to hospital, impacts I-495 traffic

by | Nov 15, 2023 | Featured: News, News, Police & Fire

Two vehicles crashed on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Hopkinton on Wednesday afternoon, sending two people with injuries to the hospital and prompting a traffic alert at Interstate 495 and I-90.

“At approximately 1:35 p.m., we responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries on Route 90 eastbound at the 106.6 mile marker,” according to an email from Massachusetts State Police media relations director Dave Procopio, “Hopkinton and Westborough Fire also responded.”

The highway was reduced to one lane because of the crash,  according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. At about 2:15 p.m. MassDOT reported a delay of up to five minutes on the westbound side, and up to six minutes on the eastbound side, according to an article on masslive.com.

Procopio added that the driver and passenger in one of the vehicles were transported to Framingham Hospital.

“We don’t have the severity of their injuries yet,” stated Procopio. “The operator of the second vehicle refused medical transport.”

Both vehicles were towed, and the accident scene was clear at 2:50 p.m., he noted.

The Westborough Fre Department posted about the crash on Facebook shortly after 2 p.m, asking drivers to seek an alternate route.

“Traffic is very bad in this area due to multiple crashes,” a follow-up post at approximately 3 p.m. stated.

Hopkinton Fire Department Chief Lieutenant John Sheridan responded to the call along with the Westborough Fire Department.

“The biggest thing that happened was the traffic delay,” he said in a phone call with the Independent at 4 p.m. “You can imagine because it was right at 495. It caused quite the traffic situation, but it wasn’t a wildly exciting scene.”
