New Elmwood School building on election ballot Tuesday

by | Nov 27, 2023 | Featured: News, News

Voters will have the final say on approving  $158 million in funding via a property tax override for a new building for the Elmwood School at Tuesday’s Special Town Election.

Voting will take place between 7 a.m.-8 p.m. at Hopkinton Middle School, located at 88 Hayden Rowe Street. Unofficial results will be announced Tuesday night after the votes are tabulated.

School superintendent Carol Cavanaugh sent out a reminder Monday afternoon after her office received inquiries about the election.

Article 1 on the new Elmwood School building was approved 622-241 at the Nov. 13 Special Town Meeting. The 72% vote in favor easily met the two-thirds majority needed for passage. The special election vote is the second part of the two-step approval process.

The $158 million figure does not include more than $61.5 million in reimbursement from the Massachusetts School Building Authority or expected rebates from MassSave and the Inflation Reduction Act, estimated at $1.7 million and $4 million, respectively.

The Elementary School Building Committee has considered for the past few years whether to replace the current Elmwood School, which was built in the 1960s, or renovate it. It was deemed more cost-effective to replace the school with a modern building on Hayden Rowe Street to meet the needs of the expanding student population. The new building would accommodate 1,195 students in grades 2-4.
