Business Briefs: New building on Elm Street near completion

Nick Slottje, president and CEO of Hopkinton-based Charlesbank Realty Group, is set to unveil his company’s newest building in the Elmwood Park Industrial Complex on Elm Street.

Situated amongst six surrounding buildings also owned by Charlesbank, the new flex industrial building is expected to be ready for occupancy Jan. 1.

During a phone interview Dec. 5, Slottje said he was preparing to show the building to four prospective tenants the next day.

“We have the luxury to cherry-pick the best use, the best credit, the best fit,” Slottje said, “because there’s so much demand for flex space in this area.”

After purchasing the property, Slottje initially envisioned the building as a boutique hotel, noting that people have to head to Milford to find lodging nearby. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed his thinking.

“We took over during the pandemic,” Slottje said, “and that changed our firm’s appetite for hospitality investments — probably forever.”

Charlesbank Realty Group, founded in 2000, owns, operates and develops commercial property. Slottje runs the company with his brother, Spencer, who serves as chief financial officer.

“My brother is my partner, and he and I live and work and raise our families here,” Slottje said. “We’re heavily invested in Hopkinton from both a social and business standpoint.”

The firm’s holdings include properties in three states, including warehouses, boutique hotels, offices, medical, retail — “a little bit of everything,” Slottje said.

For the new Elm Street building, Slottje turned to other local companies for assistance.

Hopkinton-based Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects worked on the design, while The Stukel Group — a tenant in one of Charlesbank’s other Hopkinton buildings — served as general contractor.

“All the major stakeholders were local,” Slottje said proudly.

Chamber honors Weston Nurseries

The Hopkinton Chamber of Commerce has brought back its Business of the Year Award, and this year’s honoree is Weston Nurseries.

“This year, 2023, marks 100 years in business for the Mezitt family, who have made a significant contribution not only in their field of work but in the Hopkinton community,” the Chamber shared in a statement. “We are delighted to celebrate them as Hopkinton Chamber Business of the Year.”

Weston was recognized during a ceremony on Dec. 7 at its greenhouse.
