HPD arrests ‘fugitive from justice’ who appeared to be homeless on default warrant

by | Dec 15, 2023 | Featured: News, News, Police & Fire

The Hopkinton Police Department on Tuesday arrested a man who appeared to be homeless on a default Rhode Island warrant at the Price Chopper shopping plaza on South Street. The man was determined to be a “fugitive from justice,” acording to an HPD incident report.

Michael Paul Anthony was arrested at 22 South Street. Bail was set at $50,040, and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office was contacted regarding Anthony’s extradition.

In his incident report, Officer Matthew LaTour stated he was patrolling the area and was dispatched to the shopping plaza at 6:12 p.m. after a restaurant owner reported that “a suspicious male who had been in the area for several hours tried to gain entry into several vehicles.” The police log showed that three officers, including LaTour, responded to a report of “two homeless men asking for help but blocking the doors” to the restaurant.

LaTour reported that Anthony was sitting on a curb in the parking lot drinking something from a brown paper bag when he arrived.

“Anthony stated that he was waiting in the area for his girlfriend to get out of work,” LaTour stated.

LaTour then spoke with a female restaurant employee who said she was sitting in her car “when Anthony tried to get in the back seat.”

“The restaurant owner said he was loitering inside the front entrance of the restaurant and he asked him to leave,” according to LaTour. “Both confirmed from outside that Anthony was the individual they saw. Dispatch notified me that Anthony had an active warrant and I confirmed it through NCIC [National Crime Information Center].”

When LaTour confronted Anthony about the default warrant, his reply was, “Not in Massachusetts.”

At that point, Anthony was arrested on the default warrant and charged with defaulting on the Rhode Island warrant and as a fugitive from justice under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 276 Section 19A. Anthony was handcuffed and transported to the police station. He was booked, bail was set, and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office was contacted regarding his extradition.
