In an interview after Tuesday’s Select Board meeting, Select Board chair Muriel Kramer said she has fully recovered from a stroke she experienced last month and said she has not decided whether or not to run for reelection this May.
On Dec. 10, Kramer announced that she had been hospitalized the previous week after she had a stroke in downtown Boston. She continued to express gratitude for her care and recovery, and she used her situation to educate the public on the warning signs of a stroke.
“I’m doing great,” said Kramer. “I actually was discharged from the hospital with full clearance to go back to work. I’m really one of those lucky cases.”
Said Kramer with a laugh: “I am 100% — maybe better than I ever was.”
She added that “no follow-up therapies are needed.”
“I was tired certainly, but I had a full recovery,” she continued. “I did take it easy for three weeks. It was the right time of the year to do that.”
While she received a medical clearance to return to work, she took some time to rest and recuperate during the holiday season. She also used a cautionary approach during her first Select Board meeting after the stroke on Dec. 19. She said at that meeting that she would refrain from using screens, sit at the far end of the table to improve her vision of all her board colleagues, and leave the meeting at 8:30 p.m.
“I don’t have issues with the screens,” Kramer said. “It was my first meeting back, and I was in a state of just being thoughtful.”
Neurological conditions such as stroke and epilepsy can trigger photosensitivity in some people.
She added that she is thinking of keeping her seat at the end of the table, a positive change that resulted from a negative situation.
“It’s easier table dynamics,” explained Kramer. “It’s kind of challenging to go back and forth, so my preference is to continue to stay there and be able to look in one direction. It’s just easier this way.”
She noted that Select Board member Amy Ritterbusch will continue to monitor Zoom for virtual attendees and commended her attention to detail.
“Amy always does a great job with that,” she said.
As for her candidacy for reelection to the Select Board, Kramer put no timetable on a determination.
“I have made no decision about that yet,” she said. Kramer’s term is set to expire May 20. Select Board colleague Irfan Nasrullah’s seat also is on the ballot.
