The Water-Sewer Department cautioned residents that there might be some water discoloration Friday following a fire in the center of town that required fire crews to use hydrants. Residents are advised to check their water before using it.

The fire occurred late Thursday night in a barn on Montana Road, which is off Pleasant Street. Crews were on the scene until early Friday morning.

Update, Feb. 28, 12:45 p.m.: Crews from the Hopkinton Fire Department and surrounding towns responded to a fire in a residential workshop at 15 Montana Road on Thursday night.

The HFD received a call initially reporting a barn fire on Montana Road at 10:29 p.m. Crews arrived to find a “20 by 40 two-story workshop” with heavy fire in the rear of the building on both the first and second floor, according to HFD Chief Gary Daugherty.

According to Daugherty, firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly. While the building sustained “significant damage,” there were no injuries.

Fire officials do not believe the cause of the blaze to be suspicious. “It looks accidental at this time, but we’re still investigating it,” the chief said.

Daugherty commended the responding crews for how quickly they were able to contain the fire, given multiple complicating factors. He noted that Montana Road is a narrow, one-way road, which forced mutual aid towns to park on Pleasant Street and walk down to the scene. Firefighters also had to contend with the fact that the nearest fire hydrant was more than 1,000 feet away.
