Water discoloration possible after water main break, upcoming hydrant test

by | Mar 11, 2025 | Featured: News, News

The Water-Sewer Department is advising residents to be aware of potential water discoloration following a water main break Tuesday morning and an upcoming hydrant flow test on Thursday.

Water-Sewer manager Eric Carty, in a notice to residents, stated that crews from the Department of Public Works completed repair work Tuesday afternoon on a water main on Thayer Heights Road. Crews were on scene before noon, according to a DPW Facebook post.

Some residual discoloration from the repair work is possible, so residents are advised to check their water prior to use.

Carty also noted that a hydrant flow test is scheduled on Hayden Rowe Street at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

“Please avoid using any water during that time and please check your water after 10:15 before using it,” Carty advised residents in the area. “Due to the velocity that will be flowing, this could cause discoloration throughout the area.”

Residents who experience discoloration can resolve the issue by flushing the cold water pipes in their homes. Doing so allows trapped sediments to be released.

Discolored water is safe to drink, but the town does not recommend using it for washing laundry.

For more information, visit the Water Department’s website or call 508-497-9765.
