Staff members evacuated The Learning Center on Friday morning after a nearby bus modified to house a “mobile gymnastics facility” caught fire, according to a statement from Hopkinton’s fire chief.

Fire Chief Gary Daugherty stated that a vehicle fire had been reported at The Learning Center at 59 Wood Street at approximately 9 a.m. The center hosts youth programming for toddlers through elementary school students, according to its website.

En route, firefighters learned that the vehicle was a bus. No one was on board.

“Upon arrival, the first-due engine found a bus that had been converted into a mobile gymnastics room fully involved,” Daugherty explained. “Since the fire was impinging on an adjacent building, the incident was upgraded to a first alarm.”

Mutual aid was called in from surrounding communities, he added.

As a precaution, staff from The Learning Center evacuated both school buildings.

“At the time of the incident, no students or staff members were inside the bus,” Daughtery confirmed. “No injuries were reported.”

Daugherty described the mobile gymnastics facility as “a total loss.”

An adjacent school building, referred to as “the clubhouse,” sustained exterior damage, he added.

A Massachusetts State Police trooper assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal was investigating the cause of the fire, Daugherty stated.
