Hydrant tests, PFAS filter work next week could cause water discoloration

by | Apr 18, 2025 | News

The Water-Sewer Department will be conducting two types of flow tests early next week, which could lead to water discoloration.

In a notice to residents, Water-Sewer Manager Eric Carty stated that “multiple, required hydrant flow” tests will be conducted on Tuesday. The tests will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by 11 a.m.

On Wednesday, the town will be conducting the first backwash of the PFAS filters on the town wells. Like a hydrant flow test, this work also involves utilizing rapid flows of water. The backwashing will take place between 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday.

“Please check your water before using during and after that time frame on both days,” Carty cautioned.

Residents who experience discoloration can resolve the issue by flushing the cold water pipes in their homes. Doing so allows trapped sediments to be released.

Discolored water is safe to drink, but the town does not recommend using it for washing laundry.
