No rain, low groundwater prompts water use advisory from Water-Sewer Department

by | Aug 14, 2025 | News

The Water-Sewer Department issued a water use advisory Thursday after weeks of little rain and reduction in groundwater levels.

“With water use rising, no rain in over 2 weeks and minimal chances in the forecast, groundwater levels continuing to decline and well capacities decreasing, we ask everyone to continue to conserve,” Water-Sewer Manager Eric Carty stated in a notice to residents.

Carty warned anyone still using automatic lawn sprinklers despite the town’s water restrictions to turn them off immediately.

Thursday’s water use advisory is the latest in a series of actions taken this year to conserve Hopkinton’s water. The town enacted a mandatory state of water supply conservation April 1, and the Water-Sewer Department has issued continued reminders on those restrictions throughout the summer.

The water conservation measures restrict non-essential water use, such as lawn watering, vehicle washing, pool filling and more. Residents are allowed to hand water gardens, use water for “core function of a commercial business” and for food production and livestock.

Any use not allowed by the water restriction may be subject to written warnings and fines, with continued violations potentially resulting in suspension of water service.

More information about the town’s water restrictions can be found on the town’s website. Those looking for ways to help conserve water can visit the Massachusetts Water Resource Commission’s water conservation toolkit.
