Timlin 5K shifts to virtual event due to pandemic

by | Apr 27, 2020 | Featured Front Page, News

Hopkinton’s biggest in-town road race, the Sharon Timlin 5K, will shift to a virtual event this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who participate will run 3.1 miles on their own — any route, but not the Timlin course — between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on June 20.

Organizers announced the change over the weekend, writing to participants: “It was a decision that did not come easily, but ultimately the health and well-being of our participants, volunteers, local community and staff is of utmost importance to us.”

The email indicated that updated information would be posted on the event website within a few days.

Runners still will receive their race T-shirt and number, along with additional goodies.

“While we can’t completely replicate the live version of the event, we are confident we can provide you with a unique and memorable experience,” the email read.

Runners have their choice of entering the virtual 5K, skipping the 5K but donating the entry fee to ALS research, or requesting a refund. Those who do not indicate a preference by May 15 will automatically be entered into the virtual 5K.

In 17 years the Timlin Event has raised more than $2 million for ALS research.
