The Hopkinton Fire Department on Tuesday morning worked with the Westborough Fire Department to extricate an injured passenger from a truck involved in a crash on Interstate 495 southbound at the mile 54 marker near West Main Street.

The accident involvied a black truck that sustained heavy damage to the passenger side, a Facebook post from the Hopkinton Firefighters Local 3772 union showed. There was “significant entrapment” that called for emergency teams from both departments to remove the passenger.

“We got a call about a motor vehicle accident at 5:41 this morning,” explained HFD Lt. John Sheridan in a phone interview with the Independent Tuesday afternoon. “We responded jointly with the Westborough Fire Department because of the area where the accident occurred.”

Sheridan, who was on the scene, noted that this is “a tricky area” for HFD to access, usually because of the volume of traffic. He said traffic was “minimally impacted” for about an hour because the crash occurred before rush hour.

“There were two occupants in the vehicle, the passenger and the driver,” he continued. “The passenger was trapped, and we had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the individual from the truck.”

“The driver was walking and talking, so that was a good sign,” Sheridan added. He noted that HFD personnel evaluated the driver at the scene.

WFD contributed rescue and medic personnel to the effort, according to the Facebook post. Off-duty HFD personnel were called in “from home for coverage due to minimum staffing.”

In a phone call Tuesday evening, HFD Chief Gary Daugherty said the passenger was taken to UMass Medical Center, the nearest trauma center, due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

He added that the department was “stretched thin” at that time because HFD simultaneously responded to two medical emergencies.

Sheridan said the Massachusetts State Police and representatives from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation were investigating the cause of the accident.
