Jeffrey Bernard
Jeffrey J. Bernard, 65, of Harwich and formerly of Hopkinton, passed away on May 1, 2026, surrounded by his family. Jeff battled cancer for 3 1/2 years and faced his illness with quiet strength and resilience. Born June 18, 1960, in San Pablo, California, he was the son of the late Margaret (Manfrina) Bernard. He shared 38 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Anna (Fernandes) Bernard.
Jeff met Anna while they were both working in San Diego, and together they built a life rooted in love and family. They eventually settled in Hopkinton, where they raised their children and formed many lifelong friendships. Jeff went on to have a long and successful career in biotechnology, retiring from MassBiologics in 2023. Just before his retirement, they moved to Harwich, where he found great joy in the Cape’s natural beauty, its peacefulness, and the meaningful memories he made there with friends and family.
Jeff had a deep love for the ocean and was happiest sailing or spending time by the water with a Dark ’n’ Stormy in hand. He dreamed of one day sailing through the Caribbean, island to island, and held a special fondness for St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Known for his intelligence, thoughtfulness and steady nature, Jeff had a sharp wit and a signature dry sense of humor that those close to him will never forget. While never the loudest in the room, he had a quiet presence that left a lasting impact on everyone he met. He was deeply devoted to his family and took immense pride in his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, Michael James Bernard and wife Netaya of Windham, New Hampshire; Stephen Manuel Bernard and wife Rachael of Merrimack, New Hampshire; and Juliana Lucia Bernard and partner Christopher Coveney of Boston. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Addie, Teddy and Banks; his sisters-in-law, Rena Dias and husband Armenio, and Ilda Panetta and partner Ron Larroque, both of Belchertown; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 9:30-11:30 a.m., followed by a brief memorial service at 11:30, at Chesmore Funeral Home in Hopkinton. A reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Hopkinton Country Club.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the oncology doctors, nurses and staff at Mass General for their compassionate care and support over the past several years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeff’s memory to the Mass General Cancer Center.
