The Hopkinton Running Club will run its 10-week Couch to 5K program this fall, changing up the timing for what has become a staple of the club’s offerings for over a decade.
“We decided to … try a different time of year with a different race and see how that would be,” explained Ted McNulty, an HRC board member. In previous years, the Couch to 5K ran in the spring and concluded with the Sharon Timlin Memorial Event. This year, it will line up with the Hopkinton Center for the Arts’ Wicked 5K on Oct. 25.
“That’s a really good [race],” said McNulty, noting it is a family-friendly event. “It’s not as serious as some other races.”
Couch to 5K begins Aug. 23. McNulty explained that it is a “non-stressful” and supportive program that provides training and advice throughout the 10 weeks. All runners get together on Sunday mornings then work on their training programs individually during the week.
“It’s a great program — we’re very proud of it,” said McNulty. He further explained that it is designed both for people who have never run before and those who want to get back into running. The program also is a way for the HRC to expand its community in Hopkinton. “We’re trying to grow that as much as we can,” he said.
McNulty stated that the club sees a turnout of about 50-75 participants each time the course is offered, from Hopkinton and surrounding towns. He highlighted the social aspect of the club and its focus on inclusivity.
“Our motto from the very beginning has been: ‘There’s a place for every pace,’ ” McNulty shared. “We truly mean that.”
Those interested in the Couch to 5K program can sign up on the club’s registration website. The $75 registration fee includes an HRC membership. McNulty shared that the first 75 participants who sign up also will get a T-shirt.
