Town Meeting rescheduled to morning of Sept. 12

Town Meeting has been rescheduled to be held outside Hopkinton High School under a tent at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, with a rain date/continuation date of Sunday, Sept. 13.

Originally scheduled for May 4, Town Meeting previously was twice rescheduled. It had been set for Sept. 21 prior to Tuesday night’s Select Board vote.

Town Meeting moderator Thomas Garabedian said the tent can accommodate about 200 people and expressed concern if more than that showed up. However, town clerk Connor Degan said everyone would be accommodated.

“We cannot turn people away, we would just have to expand the space that we have,” Degan said.

Degan also noted that state guidelines allow for Town Meeting to have a gathering of more than 50 people (the current state limit) as long as social distancing is in effect.

The Select Board has been encouraging article sponsors to remove their articles or take no action in order to minimize the turnout and have the meeting go quickly.

However, the Planning Board voted Tuesday to keep all seven of its articles on the warrant.

The deadline to remove an article is Aug. 25, according to Town Manager Norman Khumalo.

The Select Board also voted Tuesday to discuss reducing the number required for a quorum at Town Meeting in order to ensure that it will take place.
