Hopkinton schools to close for 2 days after another positive test at high school

All Hopkinton schools will switch to fully remote learning Tuesday and Wednesday after a second Hopkinton High School student tested positive for COVID-19, the district announced Monday evening.

“It has come to the District’s attention that we have another COVID-19 positive student at Hopkinton High School,” an email from superintendent Carol Cavanaugh to schools families read. “Because Hopkinton’s Health Department has not had a chance to begin contact tracing, and because we do not know how far-reaching this case might be, we are closing schools and campuses for in-person learning and athletics and extracurriculars for tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29th, and for Wednesday, September 30th.

“PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE CLOSING THE SCHOOLS ONLY FOR EXTENSIVE CONTACT TRACING. As of now, we only know of one new case at the High School.”

The email went on to explain that students who are scheduled for in-school learning will instead receive instruction via Zoom, following the schedule that would be in place if the students were in the building. Details are to be provided by teachers.

Teachers have been informed that they have can teach their remote classes from a location of their choosing. Whereas this is not a school building cleaning issue, teachers are allowed to enter their building to retrieve any needed supplies.

The email closed by requesting that the community “respects the privacy of any students who are COVID-19 positive in our community.”
