Freshman Johanna DuPont scored the game’s lone goal in the 64th minute as the Hopkinton High School girls soccer team completed a weekend sweep of Norton with a 1-0 victory on Sunday in Hopkinton.

Tiffany Mikulis started the game-winning sequence when she dribbled up the left side of the field and sent a pass up to Lexy Trendel, who tapped it to Brooke Dougherty near the left sideline. Dougherty delivered the ball to the middle of the box just before she was knocked down by a Norton defender. DuPont got a step on her defender, raced in and beat the goalie to the ball, redirecting it into the middle of the net.

On Saturday the girls picked up a 3-1 victory at Norton. The goals were scored by DuPont, Brooke Birtwhistle and Ashley Butler. DuPont, Kylie Skiba and Lillian York had assists. Butler and Mikulis starred on defense.

Owen Schnur scored four goals in two games for the boys soccer team, which battled Norton to a 3-3 tie on Sunday after picking up a 3-2 win on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game Spencer Smith scored with 10 minutes remaining, the third time Hopkinton came back from a deficit. Schnur netted two goals, while Andrew Gaughan had two assists. Patrick Crantz had some big saves in goal.

On Saturday the boys picked up a 3-2 win at home. Schnur scored the winner — his second of the game — on a laster to the upper right corner from just outside the box. Tora Ito had the assist after tapping the ball to Schnur on a free kick. Gaughan set up Schnur’s other goal, in the second quarter, delivering a long ball into the box that Schnur deflected into the goal with his shoulder (headers have been banned due to COVID). Gaughan also played a key role in the Hillers’ first goal, sending a cross to Ito for a left-footed finisher in the fifth minute.

The boys and girls cross country meets at home vs. Norton were rescheduled to Wednesday afternoon. The field hockey team had the weekend off.

In other HHS sports news, former longtime golf coach Dick Bliss, who retired after last season, was named the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coach of the Year for 2019-20.
