It won’t be long before warm weather is finally here. If every summer you wish you’d spent more time in the gym before diving into swimsuit season, you’re certainly not alone. Now you can have a leaner, more toned abdomen or firmer, sculpted buttocks in time for summer without breaking a sweat with Emsculpt.

Emsculpt is the first and only FDA-cleared medical device to build muscle and reduce fat. Leslie C. Huff, M.D., an Emsculpt specialist, is the only provider in the area. Her practice, Center for Image and Wellness, is located at 258 Main St. in Milford. Dr. Huff is a double board-certified, Johns Hopkins-trained physician who has seen excellent results and patient satisfaction with Emsculpt.

Numerous noninvasive body contouring devices have been FDA-cleared in recent years, each claiming to be better than the others. What sets Emsculpt apart from all the other devices in this category is that it targets both muscle and fat. All the other devices target only fat, either by freezing, with heat produced by various methods (laser, ultrasound, radio frequency) or with cold laser, and some are temporary.

In evaluating each device, Dr. Huff had strict criteria before carefully choosing Emsculpt. The device had to be safe, non-painful, with significant results documented by clinical studies. Most importantly, results had to be worth the price of treatment to the patient. Because this device met all the criteria, Dr. Huff knew immediately that Emsculpt was the one she wanted to offer patients.

“Emsculpt is the most outstanding device in this category,” she said. “It was in research and development for 10 years and has five patents. It was validated by seven independent, multi-center clinical studies. This device works. I wouldn’t offer it if it didn’t.”

As Dr. Huff explains, Emsculpt uses high-intensity electromagnetic energy to induce supramaximal muscle contractions not achievable through voluntary muscle contractions. Each 30-minute session induces 20,000 muscle contractions, resulting in the building of muscle fibers.

Moreover, a surge of adrenalin is released by muscle which causes overlying fat cells to rapidly release fatty acids (lipolysis). This causes fat cells to shrink and die by a natural process. They are permanently cleared by the body over time. Clinical studies show averages of 16 percent increase in muscle, 19 percent reduction of fat, 1.72 inches lost at the waist, and 96 percent patient satisfaction.

Men and women of any age and fitness level can benefit from Emsculpt, from those who exercise regularly to those who never work out. There are a few contraindications to Emsculpt (those having an implanted electrical device or who have a metal implant in the treatment area) because it uses strong magnetic energy.

The typical Emsculpt treatment is four 30-minute sessions over a two-week period. There is no preparation, anesthesia or downtime. Treatments are described as feeling similar to an intense workout, however the patient is reclined and relaxing.
