Hopkinton’s Rory Sullivan and Kenny Rhodes, juniors at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, recently completed intense, hands-on research projects.

Sullivan, who is majoring in interactive media and game development — technical track, as well as computer science, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Denmark. The project was titled Waste Collection Optimization for the Amager Resource Center. In their project summary, the students wrote, “The Amager Resource Center is a public nonprofit waste management company that performs incineration of household waste in their waste-to-energy plant, the Amager Bakke. In a team of four, we designed a series of recommendations centered around E-truck fleet optimization as the company will begin collecting household waste, from the entire Municipality of Copenhagen, effective in 2022.”

Rhodes, who is majoring in computer science, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Iceland. The project was titled Promoting Reykjavik as a Tourist Destination. In their project summary, the students wrote, “Visit Reykjavik is the official tourism organization for promoting the activities in the capital city area. They would like visitors to participate in local events instead of attending primarily nature-based activities. As a result, the goal of this project was to determine how to better market Reykjavik as a tourist destination.”

All WPI undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world.
