HHS Sports Roundup: Baseball advances to quarterfinals

Matt Gaughan pitched a three-hit shutout as the Hopkinton High School baseball team advanced to the Division 2 state tournament quarterfinals Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over visiting Dartmouth.

The left-hander went all seven innings, allowing three hits and two walks with two hit basemen.

Offensively, Nick Pedroli tripled to deep right on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning, and Charlie Petruney drove him home with a sacrifice fly to left.

In the fourth, Derek Hatherly singled to center, stole second and third, and scored after a wild throw on a pickoff attempt.

Davis Peishoff had Hopkinton’s only other hit.

The sixth-seeded Hillers (18-2) next will play at third-seeded Westfield on Sunday at 1 p.m. Westfield is 19-2 after an 8-0 victory over Nashoba in the Round of 32. …

Boys lacrosse struggled to score Wednesday and suffered a season-ending 12-4 loss at second-seeded Hingham. The 15th-seeded Hillers went 15-5 on the year. …

The boys tennis team saw its season come to an end Wednesday with a 4-1 loss at fourth-seeded Wayland. The 12th-seeded Hillers finish with a record of 17-3. …
