HHS Sports Roundup: Baseball, boys tennis win tourney openers; unified track wins D2 title

The Hopkinton High School baseball team opened tournament play with an 11-5 victory over Holliston on Monday. The Hillers next will play 11th-seeded Norwood (date TBA).

Hopkinton, the No. 6 seed in Division 2, received a strong effort on the mound from John Wauters (5 innings) and Andrew Gaughan (a scoreless two innings). Charlie Simulis led the offense, which scored in all but one inning — four runs in the second and sixth, and single runs in the first, fourth and fifth. …

Softball, seeded 36th in Division 1, lost to Wachusett, 12-0, on Monday. One day earlier, the girls traveled to 29th-seeded Marshfield and took home a 9-1 victory in the preliminary round, led by pitcher Charlotte Cann. …

Boys tennis opened Division 2 postseason play Monday with a 4-1 victory over visiting Beverly. Lex Kaye won his match at first singles, 6-1, 6-2. Adam Glace won at second singles, 6-3, 6-4. At first doubles, Spencer Smith and Rishit Shekhar swept their match, 6-0, 6-0. At second doubles, TJ Weeden and Sooraj Sambasivan won 6-4, 6-1. The sixth-seeded Hillers advance to host the winner of Wakefield vs. Canton on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Girls tennis is the No. 5 seed in Division 2 and will host the winner of North Attleboro vs. Chicopee Comp on Tuesday at 4 p.m. …

Boys lacrosse is the No. 23 seed in Division 2 and will visit No. 10 Marblehead on Wednesday at 6 p.m. …

Senior Kate Powers won the discus at the Division 2 state track and field championships over Memorial Day weekend, setting a meet record in the process with a heave of 139 feet, 6 inches. Powers also finished third in the shot put. …

On the boys side, junior Sean Golembiewski finished second in the 110-meter hurdles. Golembiewski was back at it this past Saturday, when he broke his own school record as he finished third in the 110 hurdles at the Meet of Champions. …

Lindsay Hong and Emma Canestrari competed in the girls golf sectional championship last Wednesday. Canestrari shot 92 while Hong shot 94, both missing the cut by a few strokes. …

The unified track and field team won the Division 2 state championship meet late last month. Dylan Gedman finished first in the javelin. Chase Dickson won the 400 meters. John Murray was first in the long jump, while Ciaran Halliday finished fourth and Jack Malone took fifth. The 4×100 really team of Dickson, Gedman, Jonah Stone and Anthony Nicolazzo finished first. …

Longtime HHS diving coach Jim Brainerd recently was recognized at the Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association banquet for his induction into the Hall of Fame. He actually was inducted in 2020, but there was no banquet until this spring. Since he started working with the Hillers in 2007, Brainerd has coached 14 league champions, eight sectional champions and four state champions as well as three All-American divers.
