Hopkinton High School freshman Elyn Stomberg pitched a two-hit shutout as the Hillers softball team opened postseason play with a 7-0 victory over visiting Plymouth North on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Division 1 state tournament.
Stomberg allowed just two infield singles and two walks as Hopkinton, the seventh seed, improved to 18-3. The Hillers next will host the winner of Monday’s game between 10th-seeded Malden Catholic and 23rd-seeded Lexington in the Round of 16.
HHS sophomore Ava Davenport, leading off the first inning, got things started offensively when she was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. In the same inning, Elena Valis walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Caroline Ozmun grounded out to second.
In the third inning, Zoe Le Vine beat out an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on Ozmun’s groundout and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Valis walked, went to second on a bunt single by Le Vine and scored on a single to center by Ozmun, the Tri-Valley League Large School Division MVP.
Hopkinton pulled away with three more runs in the sixth. Callie Arthur walked and went to second as Tenley Winn reached on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder. Both players advanced a base on a wild pitch. Arthur scored on a groundout to second by Bridget Roleke. Winn then scored on a bunt by Davenport, who ended taking second when no one covered the bag. Davenport stole third and scored on a single to left by Valis.
Track teams shine at states
The HHS boys and girls track teams competed in the Division 2 state meet at Merrimack College in North Andover over the weekend. The boys finished seventh, while the girls were 10th.
For the boys, Sean Finnegan won the 2-mile in a time of 9 minutes, 17.61 seconds. In the 100-meter hurdles, Jacob Logan was fourth and Max Keeler was fifth. Mason Barros finished fourth in the triple jump, sixth in the long jump and tied for sixth in the high jump. In the 400-meter hurdles, Jacob Logan took seventh, and Matt Logan was right behind in eighth. John Knutson was ninth in the 400. The Hopkinton 4×400 relay took sixth.
On the girls side, Bella Walkiewicz and Isabel Walker took second and fourth in the pentathlon, with Jane Hopkins finishing ninth. Walkiewicz also finished third in the high jump, while teammates Evelyn Woodbury and Emily Miller tied for seventh and Hopkins took 10th in the same event. Walker also finished sixth in the long jump, while Hopkins tied for fourth in the triple jump. Additionally, Callie Owens finished seventh in the 200, Clara Bransfield was ninth in the 400 hurdles, Ada Monopoli took ninth in the discus, Sophie Rasul ended up ninth in the javelin and Kaelyn Faber took ninth in the shot put. The 4×100 relay team took fifth, and the 4×88 relay was 10th.
Boys lacrosse falls
The HHS boys lacrosse team dropped an 8-5 decision to host North Andover on Sunday in the first round of the Division 1 state tournament.
The game originally was scheduled for Saturday but was pushed back a day due to rain and high winds.
