Hopkinton High School freshman Elyn Stomberg pitched a two-hit shutout as the Hillers softball team opened postseason play with a 7-0 victory over visiting Plymouth North on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Division 1 state tournament.

Stomberg allowed just two infield singles and two walks as Hopkinton, the seventh seed, improved to 18-3. The Hillers next will host the winner of Monday’s game between 10th-seeded Malden Catholic and 23rd-seeded Lexington in the Round of 16.

HHS sophomore Ava Davenport, leading off the first inning, got things started offensively when she was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored on a wild pitch. In the same inning, Elena Valis walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Caroline Ozmun grounded out to second.

In the third inning, Zoe Le Vine beat out an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on Ozmun’s groundout and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Valis walked, went to second on a bunt single by Le Vine and scored on a single to center by Ozmun, the Tri-Valley League Large School Division MVP.

Hopkinton pulled away with three more runs in the sixth. Callie Arthur walked and went to second as Tenley Winn reached on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder. Both players advanced a base on a wild pitch. Arthur scored on a groundout to second by Bridget Roleke. Winn then scored on a bunt by Davenport, who ended taking second when no one covered the bag. Davenport stole third and scored on a single to left by Valis.
