HHS students achieve high results on AP exams

by | Jul 28, 2026 | Education, Featured: Education

On the most recent Advanced Placement tests, 96% of 619 Hopkinton High School students scored higher than the qualifying score of 3, with the average exam scores at 4.2 out of 5. The exams are offered in 25 subjects.

At Thursday’s School Committee meeting, Sarah Ellam, the district’s chief academic officer (CAO), presented 2026 highlights of the results, comparing Hopkinton students to the state and global averages.

In calculus AB, physics 1 and biology, 100% of Hopkinton students scored a 3 or higher, compared with 70.3%, 71.4% and 74.2% at the state level and 65.8%, 69.5% and 71.2% globally.

The comparisons for psychology are 99.6% in Hopkinton, 76% in Massachusetts and 74.4% globally.

For statistics, it is 97.2% in town, 68.1% percent in the state and 63.3% globally.

Breaking it down further, 123 students taking AP biology had an average score of 4.36 out of 5, which is 88% above the state and global averages and represents 96% of Hopkinton students achieving higher than a 3.

“I think the teachers are proud of the fact every discipline is kind of showing up in this way and the kids are showing up in this way,” Ellam said, “because this reflects their commitment and their effort as well.”

Ellam spoke about the increased interest in students taking AP literature and composition. All students who took the test scored above 3, with an average of 4.4 in this subject.

The CAO also noted the psychology exams got more difficult this year, involving interpretation of peer-reviewed studies in writing and less memorization. The interest at HHS is high, with 70% of seniors taking the AP class.

Also, 99.6% scored above a 3 and had an average of 4.48.

“I think it is remarkable how much work our students, our teachers and our families put in,” said School Committee vice chair Jamie Wronka. “Because when students succeed, it’s so often a combination of our amazing teachers and our families being able to support that.”

She added, “It’s really a community achievement, which is wonderful.”

Member Nancy Cavanaugh said she is always impressed by the number of students enrolled in AP classes at HHS and taking these exams. She called the AP courses “another way differentiation is offered.”

Ellam said only Lexington had more students taking the exams, noting Hopkinton is smaller than a lot of the other communities represented.

Commenting on the “quite impressive” data, Ellam added, “It speaks to the teaching and learning of the students — because they’re exceptional, really.”
