The website AdvisorSmith named Hopkinton the safest midsize city in Massachusetts in a study released Thursday.

According to the site, midsize cities are defined as having between 10,000 and 50,000 residents (Hopkinton is around 19,000). There are 153 cities in this category.

Based on crime data published by the FBI, Hopkinton had 1.8 violent crimes and 1.6 property crimes per 1,000 residents. Using a methodology that gives more weight to severe crimes (such as murder) AdvisorSmith assessed Hopkinton a “crime score” of 3.6.

Norfolk (3.6) and Franklin (3.7) were next. Clinton (4.0), Holden (4.6), Shrewsbury (4.9), Milton (5.7), Westford (5.8), Medway (5.9) and Southborough (5.9) round out the top 10.

Boxford was named the safest small city, with Newton the safest large city.
