Already recognized as one of the safest communities in the nation with the state’s best school system, Hopkinton also has received high marks for fitness in a recent study.
According to the strength training resource and news website BarBend.com, Hopkinton is the 12th-fittest city in Massachusetts.
Contributing factors in the analysis include exercise opportunities, access to healthy food, air pollution, drinking water violations, physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and more.
The study indicated Hopkinton has a high rate of exercise opportunities at 970 per 1,000 people, “suggesting that the surrounding environment can play a key role in determining people’s fitness level.” The town also has comparatively low levels of air pollution and low rates of physical inactivity, obesity and smoking.
Weston came in first in the state ranking, followed by Boxford, Dover, Andover, Sudbury, Carlisle, Wayland, Lexington, Topsfield, Wellesley and Winchester. As for Hopkinton’s neighbors, Ashland came in 38th, Holliston 43rd, Southborough 111th, Westborough 135th and Milford 167th.
