Hopkinton State Park upper beach reopens, main beach still deemed unsafe for swimming

by | Aug 16, 2023 | Featured: News,

The water quality at the upper beach at Hopkinton State Park returned to a safe level, while the water quality at the main beach remains unsuitable for swimming due to enterococci bacteria, according to water sample test results released Wednesday.

Results were provided by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation from testing done Tuesday.

The enterococci bacteria level at the upper beach fell from 185 MPN (most probable number per 100 milliliters of water) of last week to 17, according to the DCR data. The threshold is 61.The level at the main beach was 281, according to the DCR data.

Beaches statewide have been experiencing high levels of bacteria in recent weeks during the time of year when they are in the greatest demand for recreation. One cause is the amount of goose droppings in the water. Ingesting or becoming submerged in bacteria-laden water can lead to symptoms including diarrhea and stomach pains.

Lake Maspenock remains safe for swimming.
