Hopkinton Today for Friday, Sept. 12: HFD to host home sprinkler demonstration Saturday

by | Sep 12, 2025 | Featured: Features, Hopkinton Today

Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

HFD to demonstrate efficacy of home sprinklers during Family Day

HFD Sprinkler Demonstration Family Day

The Hopkinton Fire Department, in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, will give a live demonstration of home fire sprinklers during Family Day on Saturday.

“[The demonstration] will include real fires in simulated residential environments using the Department of Fire Services’ side-by-side sprinkler trailer,” a press release from HFD’s fire prevention division states.

The simulated environment features two identical rooms, one of which has home fire sprinklers installed. Event attendees will see the efficacy of the sprinkler systems in controlling early-stage fires. Likewise, the unprotected room will show how “an uncontrolled fire quickly spreads to consume the entire room and present deadly conditions within minutes.”

According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, modern home furnishings can contribute to the rapid spread of a fire. In some instances, individuals may have only 1-3 minutes to escape a home fire. Home sprinkler systems put out 90% of home fires before fire departments can arrive on scene.

Other benefits of these systems include the release of fewer greenhouse gases and toxic runoff, along with reducing property damage.

Saturday’s sprinkler demonstration will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Hopkinton Middle School during Family Day.
