Good morning, Hopkinton! Welcome to the daily update we call Hopkinton Today — a quick recap of yesterday’s news, highlights of what’s on tap, and a photo of the day.

Emergency preparedness program to be held at Senior Center this afternoon

It’s always good to be prepared — especially as severe weather events become more frequent.

This is the drive behind an emergency preparedness program being held this afternoon at the Senior Center. Run by members of the Red Cross, the free program will cover steps residents can take to be prepared when severe weather strikes.

“Preparation is going to help get us through these severe events,” said Jessica Fitch, assistant director of the Hopkinton Senior Center.

“We’d rather be proactive than reactive,” she added.

The presentation is part of a nationally run program from the Red Cross. It will be geared toward weather events that affect the Northeast, and discuss the actions residents can take to prepare for and get through extreme weather.

“A lot of things you’re going to need for an emergency are very similar across events,” Fitch said.

This is not the first time the Senior Center has offered programs on emergency preparedness. Fitch noted that in past years, the Senior Center has brought in the Hopkinton Fire Department to teach seniors how to make their own go-bags.

Although the seminar is being held at the Senior Center, all residents over the age of 18 are welcome to attend, according to Fitch.

“The more folks who get prep info, the better we’re going to be overall,” she said.

The program begins at 1 p.m. today at the Senior Center. For more information, call the Senior Center at 508-497-9730.
